International Women's Day

The AAPS Women In Pharmaceutical Sciences (WIPS) Community invites all AAPS members to join them in recognizing International Women’s Day.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality. This year’s theme is “Choose to Challenge” – and the WIPS Community hopes all AAPS members will hear the call to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.

To help members discuss and explore this challenge, the WIPS Community has scheduled the following events:

March 6 - March 13
Members-only Screening of Picture a Scientist
AAPS Members Only –
RSVP Now

Picture a Scientist chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries -- including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists -- who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

AAPS members who have RSVP'd may view the movie online between Saturday, March 6, and Saturday, March 13. Members may also join the WIPS Community for a conversation about the film.

You must reserve your seat by Thursday, March 5 at 5 pm ET in order to see the film. Secure links and passwords will be emailed to members that have RSVP'd.

The AAPS Journal
Theme Issue Celebrates Women in the Pharmaceutical Sciences

This issue “recognizes the contributions women have made to science in the broad research area included in the term ‘pharmaceutical sciences,’” writes former AAPS President Marilyn Morris, Ph.D., and AAPS Community Leader Amy Lavelle, Ph.D., in their recent editorial. “Similar to most scientific areas, it has been a slow process for women reaching the upper echelons of the pharmaceutical world in industry or academia.”
