Nanotechnology Focus Group |

|
Purpose and Description
Although nanotechnology is a broad field of science, its application to pharmaceutical
science and technology is equally broad covering topics that span nearly every aspect
of the interests of the AAPS membership. The unifying theme is the control of matter
on a scale smaller than 1 micrometer, normally between 1-100 nanometers, as well
as the fabrication of drug and gene delivery devices and diagnostics on this same
length scale. It is a highly multidisciplinary field, which will eventually involve
and be of interest to AAPS members from nearly every section and focus group. Much
speculation exists as to what new science and technology might result from nanotechnology
initiatives and what impact it will ultimately have on our field and society in
general. The overall goal of the Nanotechnology Focus Group is to introduce the
concepts, approaches, issues, controversies and current research progress of nanotechnology
to the AAPS membership.
Goals and Objectives
The Nanotechnology Focus Group's first year will be spent organizing the membership
and establishing a vision & five year plan. Other organizational aspects that we
would like to achieve in the first year are launching the website, monthly newsletter
and membership lists. In addition, programming initiatives at the NBC and AAPS Annual
Meeting will be proposed. The first initiative will be an introductory session (likely
a sunrise session) covering a general theme (Nanotechnology and the Pharmaceutical
Sciences – How will it affect you?). The second initiative will be to gather scientists
currently working in nanotechnology and propose a joint symposium/poster session
to highlight current nanotechnology research.

Presentation and Minutes
In reference to the 2009 AAPS AM scientific program, we would like to highlight
the following:
- Monday, 11/9, 2-4 p.m. a RT on "Nanoparticles-Are They Ever Going to Amount to Anything?"
- Tuesday, 11/10, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m., a SYM on "Application of Nanoparticulate Technology
in the Development of Oral Dosage Forms : Impact on Drug Product Performance"
- Wednesday, 11/11, 2-4 p.m. a RT on "Tumor Targeting Using Nanotechnology-Based
Drug Delivery Systems", and
- Approximately 150 posters throughout the AM are dealing with nanoparticles from
a multidisciplinary perspective
