Policies & Governance

At AAPS, we strive to create a community that will further our mission: to advance the capacity of pharmaceutical scientists to develop products and therapies that improve global health. We have created policies and a governance structure to support the pursuit of that mission, and we encourage you to read through the policies to understand more about AAPS.

Bylaws

The AAPS Bylaws document the basic rights, privileges and obligations of dues-paying members. The AAPS Bylaws also document the basic rules under which the organization will operate, including the authority of the Board of Directors to govern AAPS.

The AAPS membership approved the current Bylaws in February 2018. Any changes to the Bylaws require a 2/3 positive vote by those members who cast a ballot.

AAPS Scientific Opinions and Comments Policy (PDF)

AAPS’ mission is to advance the capacity of pharmaceutical scientists to develop products and therapies that improve global health. In fulfilling this mission, AAPS convenes conferences, workshops, and other meetings to advance scientific, regulatory, and policy topics. AAPS members also gather in the AAPS Communities for open scientific discussions for the same purpose. Work products that arise from these activities should represent the best-founded scientific data and agreed opinion of the scientific experts of the association. This policy provides a framework for the process by which such documents should be reviewed and approved by AAPS leadership. A separate AAPS Guide for Authors of Scientific, Regulatory, and Policy Opinions provides guidance to authors on the preparation and submission of such documents.

Code of Ethics

AAPS member scientists recognize their special obligations to society and the public welfare.  They use their expertise with integrity to advance the health and welfare of mankind.  In their scientific pursuits they:

  • Conduct their work in a manner that adheres to the highest principles of scientific research so as to merit the confidence and trust of peers and the public in particular regarding the rights of human subjects and concern for the proper use of animals involved and provision for suitable safeguards against environmental damage.
  • Avoid scientific misconduct and expose it when encountered. AAPS uses the current federal definition of scientific misconduct, 65 FR 76260-76264:  Fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research or reporting research results.
  • Recognize latitude for differences of scientific opinion in the interpretation of scientific data and that such differences of opinion do not constitute unethical conduct.
  • Disclose sources of external financial support for, or significant financial interests in the content of, research reports/publications and avoid the manipulation of the release of such information for illegal financial gain.
  • Report results accurately, stating explicitly any known or suspected bias, opposing efforts to improperly modify data or conclusions an offering professional advice only on those subjects concerning which they regard themselves competent through scientific education, training or experience.
  • Respect the known ownership rights of others in scientific research and seek prior authorization from the owner before disclosure or use of such information including the contents of manuscripts submitted for pre-publication review.
  • Support in their research and among their employers the participation and employment of all qualified persons regardless of race, gender, creed or national origin.

Volunteer Travel Policy

Travel Support and Reimbursement
AAPS offers travel support with the goal of bringing the best possible scientific knowledge to an event. This philosophy applies to all AAPS programs including PharmSci 360, webinars, workshops, etc. AAPS uses a variety of strategies to support speakers’ participation in events. To understand how AAPS approaches the use of its resources, read the following information closely. All travel support and reimbursement opportunities will be determined during the business-planning process by staff and
are subject to limitations and individual confirmation prior to any event.

Travelships
Whether travelships are appropriate for an event, and the qualifications for them and method of distribution, is determined by staff during the business-planning process. They must fill a critical need to bring science to a meeting, and must be reasonable and financially sustainable based on the event size and audience demographic. Travelships are not an option for every event.

Speaker Reimbursement
AAPS recognizes that volunteer time and contributions are vital to our organization’s success and we highly value the leaders who help us advance our mission. As a non-profit organization, AAPS is unable to provide full travel reimbursement and full conference complimentary registrations to all volunteers. Only AAPS Staff can approve, manage, and allocate funding for reimbursement and this will be communicated prior to the event.
