School | Scientist
Interested scientists and schools of pharmacy should complete
application forms
available online.
Upon receipt of the application forms, AAPS will match the scientists
with the school. The scientist and school will arrange a mutually
agreeable schedule for the visit, which usually should last for 1-3
days. The school may request the discipline of choice and the
scientist may request the school of choice. The scientists are
encouraged to make at least two presentations: one for
undergraduate students with special emphasis on career opportunities
in the pharmaceutical companies and the second for graduate students
and faculty with emphasis on pharmaceutical research. Additional
lectures or interaction with the students and faculty are strongly
encouraged as well.
Guidelines — Colleges
The program co-sponsors formulated the following guidelines and
objectives that incorporate many of the recommendations made by past
participants of the Visiting Scientist Program. We welcome any
suggestions you may have for improvement.
OBJECTIVES
The program is designed to provide a solid educational resource based
on the following objectives:
-
Expose students to research in the pharmaceutical sciences
and encourage them to consider pursuing graduate study and
an advanced degree;
-
Expose students to career opportunities in the pharmaceutical
industry;
-
Provide colleges and their faculty with access to industry
scientists with working expertise;
-
Increase communications and foster information exchange
between academia, industry scientists and students; and
-
Convey to students and faculty the complexities, challenges,
and costs associated with drug discovery, development,
production, quality control, and marketing.
GUIDELINES
-
Length of Visit —
Approximately 1-2 days. Some colleges like to involve the
Visiting Scientist for up to 2-3 days, depending on their needs.
Please agree upon the length of the visit with the scientist
ahead of time.
-
Cancellation —
If it is absolutely necessary to cancel a visit, please contact
the scientist as soon as possible and try to reschedule. If the
college and the scientist agree on a new date, the visit may be
postponed to the next academic year, but we would appreciate
your notifying AAPS immediately. If a scientist cancels the
visit and you still wish to participate in the program, contact
AAPS and we will attempt* a new match.
-
Scheduling — AAPS will
notify the college of the assigned Visiting Scientist when a
match is made. The college is responsible for contacting the
scientist within one month of receiving the assignment. Visits
can occur any time during the academic year. The most successful
visits are those that are well planned. Discuss scheduling,
agenda, and responsibilities with the Visiting Scientist ahead
of time. Make sure to provide the scientist with information
about your college and its programs. Colleges may wish to
request additional information about the scientist and their
company.
-
Presentations —
AAPS advises that scientists preparing undergraduate lectures
dedicate a portion of their presentation to career opportunities
in the pharmaceutical sciences, in addition to any scientific
material they wish to present. We further recommend that the
scientists' presentations to graduate students and faculty focus
more on the technical aspects of their position. We encourage
additional lectures and informal meetings between the scientist,
undergraduates, graduates and faculty.
-
Program Promotion —
We recommend the college post an announcement of the scientist's
visit in the sponsor's department and student email lists (where
available) in order to get the maximum attendance from students
and faculty. We further encourage faculty to announce the
program frequently during their classes. A system for informal
meetings between the scientist and students and faculty should
be established.
-
Evaluation —
After the college and scientist are matched, AAPS will send an
evaluation form. Please complete the form and return it to AAPS.
We would like to confirm that the experience has met your
educational objectives.
-
Costs —
Unless other arrangements have been agreed upon by the
scientists and school, the college acts as the host and is
responsible for all local costs including meals, lodging and
local transportation. The scientist's company/department
gives the scientist time off and assumes all travel costs to
and from the college.
-
Number of Visits —
There is no set number of visits. We will comply with the
requests to the best of our ability, depending on the number of
scientists available.
* Colleges are asked to identify their preference regarding research
areas and scientists are asked to provide their areas of expertise.
The scientist can request up to three colleges. Although we make
every attempt to match the college and scientist based on this
information, we cannot always meet each request.
