  Pharmacogenomics (PGx) Focus Group

VOTE NOW FOR THE 2008 PGx FG CHAIR-ELECT

Definition of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics

Pharmacogenetics is the study of genetic causes of individual variations in drug response; pharmacogenomics more broadly involves genome-wide analysis of the genetic determinants of drug efficacy and toxicity. Primary candidate genes of interest include those encoding for drug receptors, metabolizing enzymes, and transporters. However, selection of optimal drug therapy may also involve disease susceptibility genes indirectly affecting drug response. Moreover, pharmacogenomics includes the identification of suitable targets for drug discovery and development.

Objectives

  1. Provide a forum for information exchange on topical developments in pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, using an interactive webpage designed for the focus group (accessible to all AAPS members).
  2. Generate yearly theme issues in pharmacogenetics-pharmacogenomics in The AAPS Journal.
  3. Establish a virtual journal in pharmacogenetics-pharmacogenomics with links to relevant articles in all life sciences journals.
  4. Organizing symposia, workshops, roundtables, guest speaker programs, etc.
  5. Develop a knowledge base in pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics in the form of relational databases, key references, links to relevant sites, etc, accessible on the focus group webpage.
  6. Facilitate communication between academia, biotechnology/genomics firms, and regulatory agencies.
  7. Provide a forum for advertisement by pharmaceutical companies with pharmacogenomics interests.
