About
In response to an increased growth in consumer interest in nutraceutical products, the need for scientific foundations in the development and manufacturing of dietary supplements or nutraceuticals has been recognized on a global basis. Additionally, a tremendous number of pharmaceuticals have been discovered from natural products. Indeed, there have been many biologically active and useful constituents from nature that are now marketed in herbal products and dietary supplements or as drugs. This focus group blends discovery, development, and manufacturing of nutraceuticals as well as the chemistry of natural products.
The Nutraceuticals and Natural Products focus group represents a broad scope of basic researchers, clinical researchers, and manufacturers involved in the use of nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, and natural products in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. It is highly inclusive of members of AAPS sections that are involved in all aspects of discovery and development that relate to natural products, and nutraceuticals. Many of these researchers elect to attend the AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition from countries outside of the United States to present their work.
From a drug discovery perspective, this focus group provides a forum for discussion among researchers engaged in basic scientific work in natural products chemistry and serves as an outlet to connect with members of other sections and focus groups with related interests in the field. This focus group represents researchers doing basic scientific work in the isolation, structure identification, and biological activity of constituents derived from natural sources.
From a development perspective, this focus group provides a forum for the advocacy of good scientific research into dietary supplements. Clinical research varies greatly in terms of quality making it difficult to scientifically measure efficacy of claims. Consumers ultimately have no basis for determining the quality of the product they are purchasing. This forum potentially will unite AAPS and other related organizations committed to providing the public and healthcare providers current and accurate information regarding claims, benefits, and safety of nutraceutical products. This focus group spans basic research, development, manufacture, and regulations that relate to all aspects of dietary supplements.
