National Biotechnology Conference Awards

The AAPS awards program provides a wonderful opportunity for scientists and graduate students to be recognized and honored for their valuable contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences. Nominate your colleagues for one of the prestigious awards to be presented by AAPS at the 2013 National Biotechnology Conference, May 20–22, San Diego. 

Research Achievement Awards in Biotechnology

This program is intended to recognize outstanding scientists who have conducted fundamental research that has had significant impact in the field of Biotechnology. Nominations can be made by any member of AAPS. The award recipient will receive a $2,000 honorarium, a framed certificate which will be presented at the 2013 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference, May 20–22, in San Diego, and travel expenses (maximum $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international), which will be reimbursed following the meeting. The recipient will also receive a complimentary meeting registration.

Innovation in Biotechnology Awards

This award is intended to recognize and promote the achievements of individuals who demonstrate innovation in the area of biotechnology. The award is open to individuals who submit an abstract to the 2013 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference. Applicants do not need to be an AAPS member. Each winner selected will receive a cash award of $500, a plaque, and a complimentary registration to the 2013 National Biotechnology Conference. In addition, travel expenses will be reimbursed (maximum $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international) following the meeting. 

Excellence in Ligand Binding Assays

This award is designed to recognize excellence in ligand binding assays within the pharmaceutical sciences. The award will promote the science and technology of ligand binding assays. Selection will be made based on the submitted abstracts and summaries of those individuals judged by the committee to have provided the most outstanding contributions in ligand binding assays within the pharmaceutical sciences. Any abstract that is submitted to the BIOTEC section for the National Biotechnology Conference that employs ligand binding assay technology will be given consideration for the award. The primary presenting author will be awarded $1,000, a plaque, and complimentary registration to the 2013 National Biotechnology Conference. 

Biotechnology Graduate Student Symposium Awards

This award is designed to recognize excellence in graduate education in the fields of pharmaceutical biotechnology. Students will be selected to participate in the symposium by the AAPS Selection Committee on the basis of abstracts submitted to the committee. On the basis of submitted abstracts and summaries, students will be selected to present their research during the Graduate Symposium at the 2013 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference. Selection will be made on the basis of those students judged by the committee to have provided the most outstanding contributions in the above fields through their graduate research. Each student selected will receive a cash award of $250 and a complimentary registration to the 2013 National Biotechnology Conference. In addition, travel expenses will be reimbursed (maximum $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international) following the meeting.

General Eligibility Requirements 

Recipients for all travelships will be selected from all applicants that meet the following eligibility requirements.

  1. Currently enrolled as a full-time student.
  2. First author of an accepted abstract.
  3. Have been a member of AAPS since January 2013 with membership in the section to which you are applying: (Note: Please make certain that your section is correctly identified in the AAPS database by contacting AAPS Member Services at +1.877.998.2277.) 

Only one abstract submission per section member will be considered for each award. The accepted abstract must be submitted with title, authors, and text, together with a complete online travelship application form.
 

PPDM Section Eligibility Requirements 

In addition to the general requirements listed above, the following apply:

  1. Multiple abstracts from one laboratory may be submitted, but only one award will be given to an individual laboratory.
  2. No more than two awards will be given to a single institution.

RS Section Eligibility Requirements 

In addition to the general requirments listed above, the following apply:

  1. Preference will be given to students enrolled in RA/QA programs.
  2. Those meeting these criteria that wish to participate must complete the online form.

Deadline for all submissions: March 4, 2013 

Applicants whose submitted papers are not accepted by the Paper Screening Committee will be removed from the eligible pool before the award selections are made.

Note: The reimbursement will be issued to the winning individuals following the National Biotechnology Conference upon receipt of documented meeting expenses (e.g., copy of airline ticket, hotel receipt, meal estimates, etc.).

Amgen is pleased to offer fourteen travelships for eligible individuals presenting papers at the 2013 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference to be held in San Diego, May 20–22.

Available: 14 Travelships at $500 for graduate/undergraduate students 

Recipients will be selected from all the applicants meeting the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Be currently enrolled as a full-time student.
  2. Have a paper accepted by one of the nine AAPS sections for presentation at the 2013 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference which the student will be presenting.
  3. Have been a member of AAPS since at least January 2013.
  4. Have no other means of supplemental support to attend the meeting.
  5. Be traveling more than 250 miles (one way from his/her academic institution) to attend the meeting.

Individuals meeting the criteria for the travelship application must complete the following online application form (AMGEN travelship application form). Applications must be received at AAPS by March 4, 2013.

Applicants whose submitted papers are not accepted by the Paper Screening Committee will be removed from the eligible pool before the award selections are made. Applicants are only allowed to accept one travelship to the AAPS National Biotechnology Conference.

All poster presenters must be registered by April 5. Any travelship winner that is not registered by April 5 will have both the funds and the poster withdrawn. 

Note: The reimbursement will be issued to the selected individuals following the meeting upon receipt of documented meeting expenses (e.g., copy of airline ticket, hotel and meal receipts, etc.).
